Recovering files after factory data reset

Hello good people of DroidForums

Lately I've received my phone back from the police after it got seized for over a year. They tried to hack it, but couldn't overcome the passcode and encryption, so they simply did a factory data reset.
I wish to try and recover whatever possible from it, like pictures and app data. Using google to search for such a service yielded only paid services that I really, really don't trust.

What can I do in order to recover what is possible from the data deleted?...
