Can not update incredible?

my original dinc lost the screen....insurance sent me a new(?) replacement. it is running 2.2, build 3.21.605.1... htc says it must be sent in for "repairs" to get to 2.3! any possible way around this? i'm a noob -no experience with any of this....HELP???? thanks.
