Recommendactions for controllers to use with emulators and games?

Hi, I'm looking for a controller that I can use to play old school games such as those on the snes emulators and perhaps something with analog sticks to play ps1 emulated games as well. Something that would also work with games with controllers off the play store would be good too.

I realize I could root my phone and use my ps3 controller but I rather have something a bit more portable, something that's also "futureproof" so it may work on later android devices that haven't come out yet....
